A bird is an animal with a backbone and feathers.
About Birds
- Birds lay eggs with a hard shell.
- Most, but not all, birds can fly.
- Birds all have beaks and no teeth.

A Robin is known as a song bird for the sounds it makes. | A chicken is a livestock bird used for eggs and meat. | An Ostrich is a flightless bird. |
This sea bird is called an Albatross. | A Puffin is a sea bird with a colourful beak. | An Eagle is called a bird of prey because it hunts and kills other animals. |

Meaning
A bird is an animal with a backbone and feathers which lays hard shelled eggs on land.
Lifecycle of Birds
Egg | Chick | Adult |
A bird begins its life in a hard shelled egg. | When the egg hatches the bird has small fluffy feathers and needs its parents to bring food and it cannot fly. This chick is called a signet. | An adult bird has large smooth feathers and most can fly. This adult is a swan. |
