Geiger Counter

Key Stage 4

Meaning

This is a diagram of a Geiger counter.

A Geiger counter is a device used to detect the ionising radiation.

About Geiger Counters

Geiger counters are able to 'count' the number of particles of ionising radiation which enter the device. This 'count' along with the time can be used to calculate the count rate.
Geiger counters can give the total 'count' of ionising particles, which has not units or can average this over time to give a count rate.
Geiger counters often have a speaker so the detection of a single particle of ionising radiation can be heard.
