Geoengineering
Key Stage 4
Meaning
Geoengineering is are an attempt to control the average temperature of the Earth's surface.
About Geoengineering
- Some scientists are investigating methods of geoengineering to mitigate global warming to prevent climate change.
These methods include:
- Solar Radiation Management - Reflecting sunlight back into space before it warms the Earth's surface.
- Spraying Sulphates into the high atmosphere to reflect light.
- Placing giant mirrors into space to reflect sunlight away.
- Painting large areas of land white to reflect sunlight away.
- Carbon Dioxide Sequestration - Removing Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Compressing Carbon Dioxide and storing it at high pressure underground or under the ocean.
- Planting vast numbers of trees to remove Carbon Dioxide through photosynthesis.
- Ocean seeding to fertilise algae in the ocean to remove Carbon Dioxide through photosynthesis.
