Superposition

Key Stage 3

Meaning

Superposition is when one wave is in the same place as another.

About Superposition

When waves are travelling they can go through each other. When they are passing through each other they are said to be in superposition which means they are in the same place.
Waves can be in superposition but particles cannot.

The waves are in superposition when they meet at the black dot. When a wave peak meets a wave trough they cancel each other out. When a wave peak meets another wave peak they make a superpeak.

This diagram shows complete waves (including peak and trough) when they meet each other.
