Key Stage 3
Meaning
Centimetres Cubed (cm3) are a unit for measuring the volume of an object.
About Centimetres Cubed
- Centimetres cubed are shortened to cm3 with with a lower case c and a lower case m and an indices of 3.
- Centimetres cubed (cm3) are the same volume as millilitres (ml).
- A centimetre cubed is the volume of a cube with sides of 1cm each. Since a centimetre is 0.01 metres then a centimetre cubed is 0.01 x 0.01 x 0.01 metres cubed (0.000001m3).
- A pipette can hold around 3cm3.
- Beakers can range in volume from 25cm3 to 1000cm3.

Key Stage 4
Meaning
Centimetres Cubed (cm3) are a unit of volume 1,000,000 times smaller than the SI Unit of the metre cubed.
