Key Stage 3
Meaning
Litres (L) are a unit for measuring the volume of an object.
About Metres Cubed
- Litres are shortened to a upper case L or sometimes an lower case l.
- 1 litre of water has a mass of roughly 1kg.
- Beakers can be up to 1 litre in volume.
Convert to Litres

Key Stage 4
Meaning
Litres (L) are a unit of volume that is 1000 times smaller than the SI Unit of the metres cubed.
About Litres Cubed
- Litres are shortened to a upper case L or sometimes an lower case l.
- A decimetre cubed is the volume of a cube with sides of 10 centimetres each. Since a 10 centimetres is 0.1 metres then a litre is 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 metres cubed (0.001m3).
- A litre is the same volume as a decimetre cubed.
