Key Stage 1

Meaning

A fish is an animal with a backbone, gills and wet scales.

Singular Noun: Fish
Plural Noun: Fish
Verb: To fish

About Fish

Most fish lay soft eggs.
Starfish and Jellyfish are not actually fish because they don't have a backbone, gills or scales.

Examples

A shark is a fish with very sharp teeth. A trout is a fish that lives in rivers and lakes.
This fish is called a Tuna. Clownfish are fish that live in and around Coral.

Note For Teachers

Be careful not to say that fish breath underwater. Breathing means to inhale and exhale air. Fish get oxygen from the water through their gills, but they don't breath because they do not have lungs.

Key Stage 2

Meaning

A fish is an animal with a backbone, gills and wet scales which lays soft eggs in the water.

Lifecycle of Fish

Eggs Fry Adult
Most fish begin their life in a soft egg, but some are born. Young fish begin to eat for themselves. This fry is a young salmon. An adult fish often travels to where they hatched to lay their own eggs. This adult is a salmon.
