Key Stage 3
Meaning

A diagram showing the bronchi.
A bronchus is one of two tubes coming off the trachea and going into the lungs.
Adaptations of the Bronchi
- The bronchi are covered in cartilage to stop them from closing when the lungs take in Oxygen.
- The bronchi contain specialsed cells which release mucus in order to trap micro-organisms and dust to prevent them entering the alveoli in the lungs.
- The inner lining of the trachea is covered in ciliated epithelial cells to sweep the mucus up away from the the alveoli in the lungs.
