Key Stage 3

Meaning

Litres (L) are a unit for measuring the volume of an object.

About Metres Cubed

Litres are shortened to a upper case L or sometimes an lower case l.
1 litre of water has a mass of roughly 1kg.
Beakers can be up to 1 litre in volume.

Convert to Litres

Unit To convert Litres
1 metre cubed (1m3) Convert to litres x1000. 1000L
1 litre (1l) Convert to litres x1. 1L
1 centimetre cubed (1cm3) Convert to litres /1000. 0.001L
1 millilitres (1ml) Convert to litres /1000. 0.001L

Key Stage 4

Meaning

Litres (L) are a unit of volume that is 1000 times smaller than metres cubed.

About Litres Cubed

Litres are shortened to a upper case L or sometimes an lower case l.
A decimetre cubed is the volume of a cube with sides of 10cm each. Since a 10centimetres is 0.1 metres then a litre is 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1 metres cubed (0.001m3).
A litre is the same volume as a decimetre cubed.

Convert to Litres

Unit To convert Litres
1 metre cubed (1m3) Convert to litres x103. 1x103dm3
1 litre (1l) Convert to litres x1. 1L
1 decimetre cubed (1dm3) Convert to litres x1. 1L
1 centimetre cubed (1cm3) Convert to litres x10-3. 1x10-3L
1 millilitre (1ml) Convert to litres x10-3. 1x10-3L
