Key Stage 3

Meaning

Milli is a Unit Prefix that means a number is 1000 times smaller than the normal unit.

About Milli

Milli can be shortened to a lower case m.

Examples

A millimetre (mm) is 1/1000th of a metre (m).
A millivolt (mV) is 1/1000th of a volt (V).
A milligram (mg) is 1/1000th of a gram (g).
An ant may be around 4 millimetres (4mm) long.

Converting from Milli

To convert from milli to the base unit you must divide by 1000. \[83000mm = \frac{83000}{1000}m = 83m\]

\[2600mA = \frac{2600}{1000}A = 2.6A\]

\[170mV = \frac{170}{1000}V = 0.17V\]

\[22mN = \frac{22}{1000}N = 0.022N\]

\[6mJ = \frac{6}{1000}J = 0.006J\]

Converting to Milli

To convert to milli from a base unit you must times by 1000. \[4m = 4\times1000mm = 4000mm\] \[34m = 34\times1000mm = 24000mm\] \[1.9m = 1.9\times1000mm = 1900mm\] \[0.73m = 0.73\times1000mm = 730mm\] \[0.092m = 0.092\times1000mm = 92mm\]
