Meaning

An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone.

About Vertebrates

There are many different kinds of invertebrate animals.
Some invertebrates have exoskeletons, which is a hard bony shell on the outside.
Some invertebrates have no bones at all and just use muscles to move.

Examples

None of these animals have a backbone so they are examples of invertebrates.

Snails are invertebrates with a muscular body and a hard shell. Earthworms are invertebrates with no bones at all. Scorpions are invertebrates with jointed legs and an exoskeleton. Octopuses are invertebrates with no bones and just muscle to move. Flies are invertebrates with 6 jointed legs.
