A meander is a bend in the river.

About Meanders

Meanders are caused by water moving slightly faster at one side of the river causing erosion and slower at another side causing deposition.

Meanders with become larger over time until the river erodes through a river bank to join up with itself forming a straight channel and an oxbow lake.
