Key Stage 3

Meaning

Kilo is a Unit Prefix that means a number is 1000 times bigger than the normal unit.

About Kilos

Kilo can be shortened to a lower case k.

Examples

A kilometre (km) is 1000 metres (m).
A kilovolt (kV) is 1000 volts (V).
A kilogram (kg) is 1000 grams (g).

Converting from kilos

To convert from kilo to the base unit you must times by 1000.

5km = 5x1000m = 5000m
12kA = 12x1000A = 12000A
3.4kV = 3.4x1000V = 3400V
0.53kN = 0.53x1000N = 530N
0.082kJ = 0.082x1000J = 82J

Converting to kilos

To convert to kilo from a base unit you must divide by 1000.

23000m = (23000/1000)km = 23km
8200A = (8200/1000)kA = 8.2kA
670V = (670/1000)kV = 0.67kV
32N = (32/1000)kN = 0.032kN
2J = (2/1000)kJ = 0.002kJ

Key Stage 4

Meaning

Kilo is a Unit Prefix that means a number is 103 times bigger than the normal unit.

About Kilos

Kilo can be shortened to a lower case k.

Examples

A kilometre (km) is 103 metres (m).
A kilovolt (kV) is 103 volts (V).
A kilogram (kg) is 103 grams (g).

Converting from kilos

To convert from kilo to the base unit you must times by 1000.

5km = 5x103m = 5000m
12kA = 12x103A = 12000A
3.4kV = 3.4x103V = 3400V
0.53kN = 0.53x103N = 530N
0.082kJ = 0.082x103J = 82J

Converting to kilos

To convert to kilo from a base unit you must divide by 1000.

23000m = (23000/103)km = 23km
8200A = (8200/103)kA = 8.2kA
670V = (670/103)kV = 0.67kV
32N = (32/103)kN = 0.032kN
2J = (2/103)kJ = 0.002kJ
