Meaning

A target organ is an organ in the body which responds to a particular hormone.

About Target Organs

Target organs respond to specific hormones. Some organs may be unaffected by a hormone while others respond to that hormone.

Examples

The liver is a target organ for the hormone glucagon.
The kidneys are target organs for the anti-diuretic hormone.
The uterus is a target organ for the hormones progesterone and oestrogen.
The ovaries are the target organs for luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone.
