Meaning

An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone.

About Vertebrates

There are many different kinds of invertebrate animals.
Some invertebrates have exoskeletons, which is a hard bony shell on the outside.
Some invertebrates have no bones at all and just use muscles to move.

Examples

None of these animals have a backbone so they are examples of invertebrates.

Snails are invertebrates with a muscular body and a hard shell. Earthworms are invertebrates with no bones at all. Scorpions are invertebrates with jointed legs and a shell. Octopuses are invertebrates with no bones and just muscle to move. Flies are invertebrates with 6 jointed legs. A crab is an invertebrate with an exoskeleton.
