To classify is to things into groups of similar things.

About Classification

When we put things in groups we are classifying them. We put things in groups because it helps us organise the world.

A builder classifies their bricks by colour and puts them into piles. A child classified their blocks by shape and colour and arranged them in rows and columns. A student classified animals by the sounds they made.

A scientist puts all their triangle blocks in one pile and all of their square blocks in another.
A scientist writes down lists of animals naming all the ones with fur in one list and all the ones that don't have fur in another list.
