About Health

If we get very unhealthy we can die.
To be healthy we must make sure our bodies get everything they need to survive and that we don't hurt the body by eating things that are bad for us or catching diseases.
To keep healthy you need to do the following:

Fresh Air

We need to breathe air to survive. Without air we would die in about 4 minutes. Some air is not clean air. It has smoke or other harmful things inside it. Smell can sometimes tell you if the air you are breathing is clean. Smoke is bad for you and you shouldn't breath it in. The exhaust of cars is bad for you. Petrol fumes are bad for you. Cleaning sprays used in the bathroom and kitchen are bad for you to breath in. If you breath these in it can make you ill.

Clean Water

We need water to survive. Without water we would die in about 2 days. Some water is not clean. If the water has a bad smell or a brown colour you should not drink it. Drinking dirty water can make you sick or even kill you.

Balanced Diet

For all the details on a Balanced Diet visit the page.

We need food to grow, repair injuries, move around and survive. Without food we would get very tired and die in about 2 weeks. Some foods are bad for us if we have too much of them. Too much fatty food like sausages and chips can make us fat and that can make us ill. Too much sugary food like fizzy drinks and cakes can give us an illness called diabetes. Too much salty food like crisps can be bad for our heart. For a healthy balanced diet we need:

protein from meat, beans or nuts.
vitamins from fruit and vegetables.
energy from bread, potatoes, pasta and rice.

Exercise

For all the details on Exercise visit the page.

We need exercise to stay healthy. Without exercise we would get tired very easily and feel sleepy all the time. You might also find it tiring to walk, run or climb the stairs and your bones become weaker and easier to break. You can exercise in many different ways. You could go running, swimming, playing sports or cycling. The more you exercise the stronger your muscles and bones become.

Keeping Clean

For all the details on Keeping Clean visit the page.

Making sure you are clean is called 'hygiene'. Many illnesses are caused by tiny creatures that live on our skin and in our mouths. If don't clean them off we get more and more of them and they can make us ill. We must clean our teeth to stop them from rotting. We must clean our skin to stop us getting rashes. We must clean our hands especially after going to the toilet and touching animals because if we put our hands in our mouths or touch our food we could be putting many of these tiny creatures into our mouths and they can cause us to get a stomach bug.
