Meaning

Magnetic domains are regions in the magnet with a particular direction of magnetisation, each of which act as smaller magnets.

About Magnetic Domains

For an object to act like a magnet the magnetic domains must be lined up in the same direction.

When magnetic domains are aligned the object has an external magnetic field so it acts like a magnet. When the magnetic domains are not aligned there is no external magnetic field because the effect of the magnetic domains cancels out.
