Meaning

To measure is to find out the size of something.

About Measuring

Measuring is when we find out how big or small something is.
You can measure lots of different things about an object like how big it is, how hot it is or how quickly it moves.

Examples

A scientist wants to find the height of a tower.
A scientist uses a ruler to find out how wide the door is.
A scientist used a stopwatch out how long they take to eat a sandwich.

Used in a Sentence

A scientist will measure the height of the tower.
A scientist measures the width of the door using a ruler.
A scientist measured the time it took to eat a sandwich using a stopwatch.

To measure is to use a scientific instrument to find the size or amount of something.

About Measuring

When you measure something you have to be careful to use your scientific instrument carefully to get the right measurement.
You must use the right tool for the job. You must use a ruler to measure height, a stopwatch to measure time and a thermometer to measure temperature.

Key Stage 3

To measure is to take two readings from a scientific instrument and find the difference between them.

About Measuring

To measure something the value and the start and the value at the end must be read and then subtracted from one another.
A measurement is the difference between two readings.

Examples

The length of an object can be measured by using a ruler to take a reading at both ends of the object (eg 5.3cm and 7.6cm readings gives a measurement of 2.3cm long).
