Meaning

open system are systems in which mass and energy can get in and out.

About Systems

A system is an object or a group of objects being studied.
In open systems energy can enter and escape. This may appear as an increase or a decrease in temperature caused by the surroundings but not by the system.
In an open system mass can enter and leave. This may affect a chemical reactions taking place in that system.
In open systems the laws of Conservation of Energy and Conservation of Mass cannot be observed.
