Key Stage 1

Meaning

A 30cm ruler.

A Ruler is a piece of equipment we can use to measure how long something is.

About Rulers

There are many different kinds of rulers but they all do the same job. There are metre rulers which can measure as long as 1 meter and as small as 1 millimeter. There are 'foot' rulers which can measure as long as 30 centimetres and as short as 1 millimetre. Some rulers are made of wood and some rulers are made of plastic.

A scientist measured the length of a table.
A scientist measured the height of their friends.
A scientist wants to measure the distance from the office to the laboratory.

Used in a Sentence

A ruler was used to measure the length of a table.
The height of the scientist's friends was found using a ruler.
The scientist's ruler was too short to measure the distance form the office to the laboratory

Note for Teachers

You may wish to avoid referring to a 30cm ruler as a foot ruler. 30cm is not exactly 1 foot, since 1 foot is 12 inches and there are 2.54 cm in 1 inch. This makes a foot 30.48cm.
