Meaning

Soil is a mixture of rocks and parts of dead creatures that have rotted.

About Soil

There are many different types of soil which depends on what rocks they are made from.
Soil is made of either sand, clay, chalk or no rock at all.
All soils have dead animal and plant material in them.
  • Chalky Soil has chalk inside it and is light grey-brown.
  • Clay Soil is made mostly of very small grains of clay minerals and is either red-orange or blue-grey.
  • Peat is a soil without any rock material in it and is very dark brown or black.
  • Sandy Soil is made mostly of sand and is a light brown colour.

Examples

Chalky Soil with lots of large rocks in it. Clay Soil with a redish brown colour.
Peat that has been dug up and put in chunks to sell to gardeners. Sandy Soil is usually found near the coast.
