Key Stage 3
Meaning
Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.
About Volume
- The volume of a regular solid like a cuboid can be found by using a ruler to measure the length, width and height of an object then multiply those numbers together.
- The volume of a liquid can be found by pouring it into a measuring cylinder.
- The volume of an irregular solid can be found by pouring water into a measuring cylinder to a known volume then placing the irregular solid into the measuring cylinder, making sure it sinks. The water level will increase. This increase is the same as the volume of the irregular solid.
- There are several common units for measuring volume:
- Metres Cubed - Used for volumes the size of a room or bigger.
- Centimetres Cubed - Used for small quantities of liquid.
- Litres - Used on drinks bottles.
- Millilitres - Used for small quantities of liquid.
- Centimetres Cubed and Millilitres are the same volume.
