Millions of years ago the arctic fox had dark fur and lived in the woods. When it snowed they were not very well camouflaged and found it difficult to hunt. Variation meant some had slightly lighter coloured fur and were able to get more food so they had more offspring. The next generation inherited the trait of slightly lighter coloured fur. Variation meant that some were born with even lighter fur. Those were more likely to survive and have offspring. In the arctic habitat eventually all the foxes with dark fur became extinct and only ones with white fur were left.
