Environmental Change

Key Stage 2

Meaning

Environmental change means a change in the conditions of a habitat.

About Environmental Change

The environment depends on the temperature, amount of water, amount of sunlight and the amount of nutrients in the soil.
When there is an environmental change this can change or destroy a habitat.
Environmental change can cause certain types of creature to die.
Too much rain can cause floods which kill creatures that live underground.
If there is not enough rain it causes a drought and creatures run out of water.
If a habitat gets too cold lots of the creatures might die.

Examples

Bad changes to the environment.
PolarBearIceberg.png
Deforestation.png
If the temperature of Arctic habitats goes too high all the ice will melt and polar bears might all die. Woodland habitats are cut down to make room for fields for cattle. When the woodlands are taken away the creatures that need that habitat will die.

Pollution like litter can kill lots of creatures in a habitat because they eat it by accident and it gets stuck in their stomachs. An asteroid hit the Earth 66 million years ago and the dust and ash from the fires blocked out the sunlight for years. This caused all the dinosaurs to die.
Helping the environment.

Making 'nature reserves' that humans are not allowed to damage can make sure habitats are not destroyed. Building a pond in a garden provides a habitat for many wild animals and plants.
