Equilibrium Position (Physics)

Key Stage 4

Meaning

The equilibrium position is the point on the wave of zero displacement.

About the Equilibrium Position

The equilibrium position is in the middle of a wave (vertically).
The equilibrium position is used to show the amplitude of a wave with the greater the amplitude the greater the displacement from the equilibrium position.

This is a high amplitude wave shown by the large displacement between the peak (or trough) of the wave and the equilibrium position. This is a low amplitude wave shown by the small displacement between the peak (or trough) of the wave and the equilibrium position.
