High Level Nuclear Waste
Key Stage 4
Meaning
High level nuclear waste is nuclear waste which extremely radioactive but will not remain so for more than a few decades due to a short half life.
About High Level Nuclear Waste
- After around 50 years high level nuclear waste becomes Intermediate Level Nuclear Waste.
- High level nuclear waste requires shielding to prevent irradiation of living organisms and containment to prevent contamination of the environment.
- High level nuclear waste releases a lot of energy which increases the temperature of the material so it requires cooling to prevent it heating up so much that melts or catches fire.
