: [[Alexander Fleming]] discovered penicillin after accidentally contaminating a [[Culture Medium|culture medium]] and noticing that [[bacteria]]l colonies would not grow near some mould colonies. The mould was known as 'Penicillium' so the [[chemical]] that was killing the [[bacteria]] was called Penicillin.
