: [[Dialysis]] is used when a person's [[kidney]]s fail to remove [[urea]].
: In [[dialysis]] the [[blood]] is pumped out of the body through a tube with a [[permeable]] [[membrane]]. Surrounding that tube is a [[fluid]] which contains no [[urea]], but a safe [[concentration]] of [[glucose]] and [[salt]]s to allow the [[diffusion]] of [[urea]] out of the [[blood]] due to a [[Concentration Gradient|concentration gradient]] but no [[diffusion]] of [[salt]]s or [[glucose]].
