===About Genes===
: There can be several [[allele]]s of the same [[gene]]. A [[human]] will inherit one [[allele]] of a [[gene]] from their mother and another [[allele]] of a [[gene]] from their father.
: Only some characteristics are [[Coding DNA|coded]] for by one [[gene]]. Most characteristics are controlled by a large number of [[gene]]s in the [[genome]].
[[Gene]]s can be divided into two categories:
*[[Coding DNA]] - [[Gene]]s which are '[[Gene Expression|expressed]]' which means used as the templates for [[Protein Synthesis|protein synthesis]].
*[[Non-coding DNA]] - [[Gene]]s which affect whether other [[gene]]s will be [[Gene Expression|expressed]]. These [[gene]]s are said to 'turn off' parts of the [[DNA]] and can respond to environmental changes.
