Key Stage 2

The stem is a plant organ that supports the plant and connects the leaves and roots to allow chemicals to be transferred between them.

Adaptations

The stem has long hollow tubes inside it to transport water from the roots to the leaves and flower and different tubes to transport food from the leaves to the roots and flower.
A stem often has woody tissue inside it that is hard but bendy which supports the plant to grow tall without breaking.

Meaning

The stem is an organ in the Shoot System of a plant that is responsible for supporting the leaves and flower and transports water and food between the roots and leaves.

About the Stem

The stem has veins inside it that have two tubes; the Xylem and the Phloem.
The Xylem transports water and minerals up the stem to the leaves.
The Phloem transports food from the leaves to the roots.
