Key Stage 3

Meaning

A cone is a cell in the eye which can detect colour.

About Cones

Humans have three different types of cone;
  • Blue - Which is sensitive to blue light.
  • Red - Which is sensitive to red light.
  • Green - Which is sensitive to green light.

Key Stage 4

Meaning

Cones are receptor cells in the eye which can detect colour.

About Cones

Humans have three different types of cone;
  • Blue - Which is sensitive to blue light.
  • Red - Which is sensitive to red light.
  • Green - Which is sensitive to green light.
When cone detects light is creates an action potential which is sends an impulse down the optic nerve to the brain.
