Key Stage 3
Meaning
The nervous system is an organ system which detects changes in the environment and allows the body to respond to those changes.
About the Nervous System
- The nervous system is made of the brain, the nerves and the sensory organs.
- Drugs can affect the nervous system changing they way an animal senses changes in the environment and how quickly they can respond to them.
Key Stage 4
Meaning
The Nervous System is an organ system which sends electrical impulses around the body to detect changes in the environment and respond to those changes.
About the Nervous System
- The nervous system consists of the Central Nervous System (made of the brain and spinal cord and the Peripheral Nervous System (the other nerve and the sense organs).
- The nervous system coordinates movements of an organism.
- Stimulants affect the nervous system by increasing the speed of electrical impulses in the nerves. This decreases reaction time.
- Depressants affect the nervous system by decreasing the speed of electrical impulses in the nerves. This increases reaction time.
