Key Stage 4

Meaning

In Vitro Fertilisation is a fertility treatment in which the sperm and ovum are combined outside the body.

About In Vitro Fertilisation

In vitro fertilisation requires several steps.

  1. The patient receives a dose of hormones, usually follicle stimulating hormone which affects the ovaries causing several ova to mature.
  2. The ova are extracted from the ovary while a semen sample is provided by the male.
  3. The ova and sperm are mixed in a petri dish where the sperm fertilise the ova.
  4. The fertilised ovum is then inserted into the lining of the uterus for implantation.
