Meaning
A homologous series is a group of organic compounds with the same functional group.
About Homologous Series
- Each different homologous series has a different functional group.
There are four homologous series you should know:
- Alkanes - This series includes Methane, Ethane, Propane and Butane.
- Alkenes - This series includes Ethene, Propene and Butene.
- Alcohols - This series includes Methanol, Ethanol, Propanol and Butanol
- Carboxylic Acids - This series includes Methanoic Acid, Ethanoic Acid, Propanoic Acid and Butanoic Acid.
