Key Stage 1

Meaning

A place within a habitat with special conditions that a creature can live in.

Singular Noun: Micro-habitat
Plural Noun: Micro-habitats

About Micro-habitats

Some creatures can't survive everywhere in a habitat. They must find a special place inside a habitat with just the right conditions to survive.

Examples

Woodlice cannot survive out in the open, so they live under logs and rocks where the conditions of these mirco-habitats are just right. Tube worms live in the sea but only near underwater volcanoes. This micro-habitat is very warm and gives them the food they need to survive.
A Termite mound is a micro-habitat built by the termites in grasslands. It provides the termites with the ideal conditions to survive. Ponds are found in forests and grassland habitats. They are an ideal micro-habitat for water lilies.

Key Stage 2

Meaning

A place within a habitat with special conditions that a creature can live in.

About Micro-Habitats

A micro-habitat can be affected by seasonal changes.
  • Grasslands may be flooded destroying a termite mound.
  • Ponds may dry up if there is not enough rain killing all the fish.
