Key Stage 4
Meaning
The Sievert (Sv) is the SI Unit of radiation dose.
About Sieverts
- Sieverts are shortened to Sv with an upper case S and a lower case v.
- A Sievert is one Joule of energy transferred to one Kilogram of tissue by ionising radiation.
- The magnitude of a radiation dose is related to the harmful effects of ionising radiation. 1 sievert represents a 5.5% risk of causing cancer.
Converting to Sieverts
| Unit | To convert | Sieverts |
| 1 megasievert (1MSv) | Convert to Sieverts x106 | 1x106Sv |
| 1 kilosievert (1kSv) | Convert to Sieverts x103 | 1x103Sv |
| 1 Sievert (1Sv) | Convert to Sieverts x1 | 1Sv |
| 1 millisievert 1(mSv) | Convert to Sieverts x10-3 | 1x10-3Sv |
| 1 microsievert 1(µSv) | Convert to Sieverts x10-6 | 1x10-6Sv |
| 1 nanosievert 1(nSv) | Convert to Sieverts x10-9 | 1x10-9Sv |
