Key Stage 2

Meaning

All the colours in the rainbow.

The spectrum is all the colours of the rainbow.

About the Spectrum

The spectrum is made of the following colours:
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo
  • Violet

Key Stage 3

Meaning

A spectrum is when the different wavelengths of visible light are separated.

About Spectra

The spectrum of white light can be seen in a rainbow.
A prism can be used to make a spectrum.
The spectrum of white light is made of the following colours:
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo
  • Violet
If a spectrum is made from non-white light then it may not have all these colours.

Key Stage 4

Meaning

A spectrum is when the different wavelengths of visible light are separated.

About Spectra

A spectrum depends on the source of light.
The spectra for the emission of light from different elements are shown.
