Key Stage 4

Meaning

An organelle is a structure inside a cell that performs a particular function.

About Organelles

Some organelles are bound by a membrane and referred to as membrane bound organelles. However, this is not true for all organelles such as the flagellum.

Examples

Nucleus.png
Chloroplast.png
The nucleus is a membrane bound organelle in all eukaryotic cells. The chloroplast is a membrane bound organelle found in plant cells and some protists.
Eyespot.png
Flagella.png
The eyespot is an organelle found in some protists including the Euglena. The flagellum is an organelle in some protists and some bacteria.
