Key Stage 4
Meaning
Dialysis is a medical procedure to remove waste from the blood using an artificial kidney.
About Dialysis
- Dialysis is used when a person's kidneys fail to remove urea.
- In dialysis the blood is pumped out of the body through a tube with a permeable membrane. Surrounding that tube is a fluid which contains no urea, but a safe concentration of glucose and salts to allow the diffusion of urea out of the blood due to a concentration gradient but no diffusion of salts or glucose.
