Key Stage 3
Meaning
A danger of electrocution is when there is electricity at such a large potential difference that it could pass through a living organism.
About Danger of Electrocution
- A danger of electrocution is caused by one object being at a different voltage to another object leading to a potential difference between the two objects. If that potential difference is large enough it will cause an electrical current to pass through the body.
- Electrocution may cause burns down the path the electricity flows or it may stop the heart from beating because the heart relies on electrical signals to beat.
Precautions
- Low Potential Difference - To reduce the chance of electrocution.
- Low current - To reduce the damage caused by electrocution.
- Switch off when not in use.
- Use insulating materials to prevent contact with a conductor.
