Key Stage 3

Meaning

This prism splits white light into waves of radiation with different colours.

Radiation is an energy transfer that spreads the energy by waves starting from a central point.

About Radiation

Light is a radiation that can transfer energy from one energy store to another.
Sound is a form of radiation that transfers energy by pressure waves through a solid, liquid or gaseous medium.

Key Stage 4

Meaning

Radiation is an energy transfer that spreads the energy by waves starting from a central point.

NB: Radiation should not be confused with Ionising Radiation. Most radiation is harmless. Ionising Radiation is extremely dangerous.

About Radiation

Radiation can transfer energy through a medium.
The energy transferred by radiation increases with the intensity of the radiation. Loud sounds transfer more energy than quiet sounds. Bright light transfers more energy than dim light.
Radiation can be harmful depending on the intensity. The greater the intensity the more harmful it can be.
