Key Stage 5

Meaning

A π-meson is a type of meson which has a strangeness of zero.

About π-mesons

NB: You do not need to memorise the exact composition of a given π-meson. However, you should be able to determine a possible quark composition given the charge of the meson and by remembering the properties of the up-quark, down-quark.

π-meson may consist of:
  • Up-antidown quark pair (π+).
  • Down-antiup quark pair (π-).
  • Up-antiup quark pair (π0).
  • Down-antidown quark pair (π0).
  • Strange-antistrange quark pair (π0).
