Key Stage 4

Meaning

A structural formula is a type of chemical formula which shows the arrangement of atoms in a compound.

About Structural Formula

A structural formula gives more detail than a chemical formula about the arrangement of atoms in a compound as a chemical formula simply states the number of atoms of each element while a structural formula places them in order when there is a chain molecule.

Examples

Propane Propene Propanol Propanoic Acid But-1-ene But-2-ene Butan-1-ol
Chemical Formula C3H8 C3H6 C3H7OH C3H6O2 C4H8 C4H8 C4H9OH
Structural Formula CH3CH2CH3 CH2CHCH3 CH3CH2CH2OH CH3CH2COOH CH2CHCH2CH3 CH3CHCHCH3 CH3CH2CH2CH2OH
