Key Stage 4
Meaning
A structural formula is a type of chemical formula which shows the arrangement of atoms in a compound.
About Structural Formula
- A structural formula gives more detail than a chemical formula about the arrangement of atoms in a compound as a chemical formula simply states the number of atoms of each element while a structural formula places them in order when there is a chain molecule.
Examples
Propane | Propene | Propanol | Propanoic Acid | But-1-ene | But-2-ene | Butan-1-ol | |
Chemical Formula | C3H8 | C3H6 | C3H7OH | C3H6O2 | C4H8 | C4H8 | C4H9OH |
Structural Formula | CH3CH2CH3 | CH2CHCH3 | CH3CH2CH2OH | CH3CH2COOH | CH2CHCH2CH3 | CH3CHCHCH3 | CH3CH2CH2CH2OH |
