Respiration is the process of releasing energy from food molecules.

About Respiration

Respiration can be Aerobic Respiration, requiring Oxygen, or Anaerobic Respiration which can take place in the absence of Oxygen.
In eukaryotic cells respiration takes place in the mitochondria.
In prokaryotic cells respiration takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.
