Meaning

A displacement reaction is a chemical reaction where one element in a compound is replaced by another more reactive element.

About Displacement Reactions

Displacement reactions happen when a compound contains an element that is replaced by another element that is higher on the reactivity series.
Displacement reactions can be used to extract metals from ores.

Examples

Copper Sulphate + Magnesium → Magnesium Sulphate + Copper
Iron Chloride + Calcium → Calcium Chloride + Iron
Lithium Hydroxide + Potassium → Potassium Hydroxide + Lithium
Iron Oxide + Aluminium → Aluminium Oxide + Iron
