Key Stage 3
Meaning
A displacement reaction is a chemical reaction where one element in a compound is replaced by another more reactive element.
About Displacement Reactions
- Displacement reactions happen when a compound contains an element that is replaced by another element that is higher on the reactivity series.
- Displacement reactions can be used to extract metals from ores.
Examples
- Copper Sulphate + Magnesium → Magnesium Sulphate + Copper
- Iron Chloride + Calcium → Calcium Chloride + Iron
- Lithium Hydroxide + Potassium → Potassium Hydroxide + Lithium
- Iron Oxide + Aluminium → Aluminium Oxide + Iron
