Displacement Reaction

Key Stage 3

Meaning

A displacement reaction is a chemical reaction where one element in a compound is replaced by another more reactive element.

About Displacement Reactions

Displacement reactions happen when a compound contains an element that is replaced by another element that is higher on the reactivity series.
Displacement reactions can be used to extract metals from ores.

Examples

Copper Sulphate + MagnesiumMagnesium Sulphate + Copper
Iron Chloride + CalciumCalcium Chloride + Iron
Lithium Hydroxide + PotassiumPotassium Hydroxide + Lithium
Iron Oxide + AluminiumAluminium Oxide + Iron
