Key Stage 3

Meaning

Oils are liquid (at room temperature) chemicals with a large proportion of Hydrogen and Carbon atoms.

About Oils

Oils are usually more viscous than water.
Oil does not mix with water.
Crude Oil is a hydrocarbon oil.
Oil can refer to the liquid lipids in our diet such as Sunflower Oil or Olive Oil.

Key Stage 4

Meaning

Oils are liquid (STP) organic compounds.

About Oils

Oils are usually more viscous than water.
Oil does not mix with water.
Crude Oil is a hydrocarbon oil.
Oil can refer to the liquid lipids in our diet such as Sunflower Oil or Olive Oil.
The lipid form of oil are referred to as unsaturated due to double bonds between Carbon atoms which reduces the number of Hydrogen atoms in the molecule.
