Key Stage 3

Meaning

Acid + Metal Carbonate → Metal Salt + Carbon Dioxide + Water is the general equation for a neutralisation reaction between a Metal Carbonate and an acid.

About 'Acid + Metal Hydroxide' Reactions

Acid + Metal Carbonate reactions are exothermic so the there will be a temperature rise.
The reaction between a Metal Carbonate and an acid produces Carbon Dioxide gas which can be seen bubbling from the Carbonate.
The reaction between a Metal Carbonate and an acid produces water.
The reaction between a Metal Carbonate and an acid produces a Metal Salt.

Key Stage 4

When Acid + Metal Carbonate reactions occur the H+ ions gain an electron from the Carbonate ion causing the Carbonate to split into Carbon Dioxide and an Oxygen which bonds with the Hydrogen atoms to produce water.
