Key Stage 3
Meaning
Acid + Metal Oxide → Metal Salt + Water is the general equation for a neutralisation reaction between a Metal Oxide and an acid.
About 'Acid + Metal Oxide' Reactions
- Acid + Metal Oxide reactions are exothermic so the there will be a temperature rise.
- The reaction between a Metal Oxide and an acid produces water
- The reaction between a Metal Oxide and an acid produces a Metal Salt.
Examples
Acid + Metal Oxide → Metal Salt + Water
- Hydrochloric Acid + Lithium Oxide → Lithium Chloride + Water
- Hydrochloric Acid + Iron Oxide → Iron Chloride + Water
- Sulphuric Acid + Potassium Oxide → Potassium Sulphate + Water
- Sulphuric Acid + Aluminium Oxide → Aluminium Sulphate + Water
- Nitric Acid + Magnesium Oxide → Magnesium Nitrate + Water
- Nitric Acid + Titanium Oxide → Titanium Nitrate + Water
- Citric Acid + Sodium Oxide → Sodium Citrate + Water
- Citric Acid + Nickel Oxide → Nickel Citrate + Water
- Ethanoic Acid + Calcium Oxide → Calcium Ethanoate + Water
- Ethanoic Acid + Manganese Oxide → Manganese Ethanoate + Water
Key Stage 4
- Acid + Metal Oxide reactions occur when the Metal in the Metal Oxide is more reactive than Hydrogen. This means the metal can lose electrons more easily than Hydrogen can.
- During an Acid + Metal Oxide reaction the H+ ions gain an electron from the Metal and bond with the Oxygen to produce water.
Examples
Acid + Metal Oxide → Metal Salt + Water
\(2HCl(aq) + Li_2O(s) → 2LiCl(aq) + H_2O(l)\)
\(6HCl(aq) + Fe_2O_3(s) → 2FeCl_3(aq) + 3H_2O(l)\)
\(H_2SO_4(aq) + K_2O(s) → K_2SO_4(aq) + H_2O(l)\)
\(3H_2SO_4(aq) + 2Al_2O_3(s) → Al_2(SO_4)_3(aq) + 6H_2O(l)\)
\(2HNO_3(aq) + MgO(s) → Mg(NO_3)_2(aq) + H_2O(l)\)
\(6HNO_3(aq) + Ti_2O_3(s) → 2Ti(NO_3)_3(aq) + 3H_2O(l)\)
\(2CH_3COOH(aq) + Na_2O(s) → 2CH_3COONa(aq) + H_2O(l)\)
\(2CH_3COOH(aq) + CaO(s) → (CH_3COO)_2Ca(aq) + H_2O(l)\)
